Midnight Magnolias

Blacky Custom Art Toy

Scope

 Art Toy Intervention

Artistic intervention of the first Art Toy of Blacky, an original character by the Mexican artist Brebé.

The figurine was part of a collective exhibition, The Blacky Custom Show (July 13th – 28th, 2024), at Bootleg Conspiracy, Mexico City.

The COncept

I named my intervention Magnolias de medianoche (Midnight Magnolias).

I thought of mystical plants growing in the darkness of the night for the body and the masks used in Kabuki theaters for the face.

I like the shape of Magnolia flowers and I loosely based the flowers on them.

The Process

From white unpainted poured resin to a fully painted body with a mineral clay standing base.

Materials:
+ Poured resin (art toy body – by Gobothoi)
+ Gray and black primer
+ Matte and metallic acrylic paint
+ Mineral clay (standing base)
+ Lacquer (high gloss finish)

The Bloopers

I also noticed the figurine fell easily, so I had to think of a standing base, which wasn’t part of the original plan.

The process wasn’t a straight line.

The first primer coat failed due to poor weather conditions, and the second chipped.

The Outcome

From Mexico to the USA

My figurine was selected by NewtownHQ, an art toy and collectibles store based in New York City, to be featured on their table at CollectedCon in Chicago in August 2024.

A collector bought the art toy at the NewtownHQ NYC store in January 2025.
