100 Sleeves Challenge: The Human Contradiction

original cover design

This post is part of the 100 Sleeves: One hundred Album Covers Re-Designed project, a personal challenge I created for myself at the end of 2020. The goal is to create 100 album covers, a new one every week, inspired by the music I’m enjoying at the moment.

I’ve been wanting to do a Delain album for a while. I’ve been following their career for, probably, a decade and since they announced a massive lineup change last year, they won’t ever be the same. The Human Contradiction is my favorite album by them as I enjoy it as a whole.

The album’s title was inspired by Octavia E. Butler’s science fiction trilogy Lilith’s Brood. ‘The Human Contradiction’refers to humans, in general, being highly intelligent and hierarchically structured at the same time. The lyrics explore themes of being different and living under the expectations of society.

I wanted to follow the concept of duality for this cover, and I was inspired by French-suited playing cards. I wanted the design to work upside down, but represent two different characters: A Queen and a Witch. I also wanted to work on a limited color palette, and because I made a Day and Night scene it represented a fun challenge. I’m pretty happy about this one as I feel I achieved exactly what I was aiming for.
