“I wanna hold the hand inside you
I wanna take the breath that’s true
I look to you and I see nothing
I look to you to see the truth”
Fade into you – Mazzy Star
That song by Mazzy Star is certainly piercing, as many others in the album I chose to be my sleeve number TWENTY for the #100albumsleeves project – I’m in amazement I just hit the 20s 😱-.
I’ve been in the mood for mellow music and I gave in to this album. Mazzy Star is a US alternative rock band formed in 1989. They gained some success in the mid-1990s with their song “Fade into You“. Of course in the 90’s I was a kid so I didn’t hear about them until much later.
The year was 2011, and their song “Into Dust” was part of a trailer/commercial of the videogame “Gears Of Wars 3“. It grabbed my attention instantly. I remember thinking “what is this!?” and looking them up. It was because of this that I also learned about the existence of the music genre “Dream Pop“, which would later lead me to discover (and love) other artists like Lana del Rey and Beach House.

My design is inspired by the “Fade into You” lyrics: the idea of being with someone, devoting yourself to that person, but knowing deeply that they’re emotionally unavailable and that they can’t see themselves the way you see them.
I worked on this piece with little hesitation. I visualized the silhouettes and decided to go with it, without much thought to the colors or textures. But because I just put myself into work I had extra time to experiment with that. You can see the process in the GIF below.
I have to say that I’m super happy with the result of this piece and it is my favorite in the project so far. 😍
