The last quarter of the year (2021) was a bit busy and complicated for me, and the blog got a bit neglected, but If you supported me on Ko-fi during that time then you know the 100 Sleeves project was still up and running.
Album #35 is “Memo Rex Commander y el Corazón Atómico de la Vía Láctea” (translations: “Memo Rex Commander and the Atomic Heart of the Milky Way”) and as one may have a hard time remembering the long name, so did I coming up with an idea.
I ended up saying “Fuck it! I’m going to put out some paper and watercolors and just have fun!”, and so I started applying random strokes on the paper. My painting was pretty abstract at some point, but it started to resemble an eye in the universe and I embraced that idea when it came through.

When I was about to scan my painting my scanner threw a tantrum and refused to do anything. While I was waiting for my scanner to respond (more than an hour) I started playing with typography on Photoshop and I ended up with a totally different album cover:

I really liked the result of this loose, quick exercise. It is minimalistic, but still interesting with the added pop of color using the band’s logo. I also added a pencil scribble texture so it wasn’t too flat.

It wasn’t until 2 days later that I could finish the watercolor version. After scanning, I reinforced the eye concept with an iris texture using Photoshop. At some point, I thought of leaving the cover without text, but I ended up liking the look with text. It feels like a book cover about the mysteries of the universe.
