Sleeve TWENTY ONE ! falling into the Dream Pop rabbit hole ✨🕳️🐇.
This week I decided to pursue not one, but TWO ideas for the cover of the album Bloom by Beach House (whom I remembered last week after listening to Mazzy Star).
It is hard for me to describe how the music from this album makes me feel, it is somehow a chameleonic experience. I had this idea it could be the soundtrack of the common life, with its highs and lows. So my first idea was to wander around with my camera and see what I could find.
I took many pictures, mostly of trees and plants. I also found a dead chair and a dirty playhouse in a building’s patio. The chair, all alone and unusable, gave me that ordinary feeling loaded with nostalgia. I also liked the fact it was an Acapulco chair (a Mexican design) so the image could have a connection to the original cover of the album (a photograph of the ceiling of Mexico city’s airport).

I played with the photographs in photoshop and did a collage to get a trippy confusing vibe. I later imagined the interior could be blue as my favorite song is called “Lazuli“, as the blue gemstone. Though now that I was re-listening to the album non-stop I got a little obsessed with the song “Wild“.
Part of the process of this design
In the meanwhile, a new watercolor piece was drying on my desk. I read that a large group of jellyfish is called a “Bloom” and I was hypnotized by the pictures of them. I felt like making a watercolor painting of that. I was so insecure it could look good, that I didn’t document any part of the watercolor process. I’m glad I pushed through that worry because it ended looking so good I surprised myself.
