100 Sleeves Challenge: Back To Black

Original Cover Design (Deluxe version)

Tenth sleeve for my project #100albumsleeves🔥. That’s 10 weeks y’all !!!

I’ve been wanting to make an Amy Winehouse portrait since forever, and I finally did.

I first heard her in 2009 with her collaboration with Buena Vista Social Club for their album Rhythms del Mundo: Classics.

But it wasn’t until early 2011 that I became a total fan, just months before her passing 😢. I was really sad as I felt I was just getting to know her, and my dream of seeing her live was now not possible.

I don’t know why, but whenever I listen to her music I binge it. I’m a fan of EVERYTHING she created (except for the remixed versions of her songs). It was hard for me to pick an album, but I ended up picking Back to Black as I read she was proud of it and I wanted to honor that.

The album is influenced by the pop and soul music of 1960s girl groups, so I took inspiration from the visuals that were around during that decade, specifically Op Art, Pop Art, and Psychedelic Art.

I did all the lines by hand and resisted the urge of making corrections on the computer, as I wanted to challenge my perfectionism. I added the color digitally, and I used a halftone filter and misaligned them to give the effect of printing errors.

I don’t know if this could have been something of her liking, as her album covers were a little more classy, but I had a lot of fun with it.
