100 Sleeves Challenge: All Is Violent, All Is bright

original cover design for the remastered version of the album

This post is part of the 100 Sleeves: One hundred Album Covers Re-Designed project, a personal challenge I created for myself at the end of 2020. The goal is to create 100 album covers, a new one every week, inspired by the music I’m enjoying at the moment.

2022 began with great music recommendations by Spotify, among them God Is An Astronaut. They recently released a live version of All Is Violent, All Is Bright and I believe that’s why Spotify put them on my radar.

I never heard of this band before, I found their music enchanting and I loved them immediately. Their sound is melodic, energetic, and kind of “out of space”, at moments it wants to be more, yet the songs are short, sweet, and simple. For me, it set the perfect mood to make art without being distracted or bored.

The album feels amazing on a first listen, so you might think is not a good candidate to have as background music, but the magic wears off if you leave it on a loop. For me, this is not negative though as I was already tired of Lo-fi Hip Hop as background noise. To put it in a more positive way: more than “background noise” GIAA sound is “atmospheric music”.

The spacey sound, the name of the album, and the name of the songs made me think of neutron stars collisions (Violent+Bright). But it also made me think of depression and suicide, so I ended painting a black hole overlapping with a crying woman instead. Black Holes can result from neutron stars collisions anyway, so it wasn’t so far from my initial idea.
